Why We're Working Together

Unified in a common goal to protect threatened wildlife, Koala and WWF have worked together in partnership since August 2017.

Koala is supporting WWF-Australia as our ‘Visionary Partner for Koala Conservation’, working in partnership to help protect biodiversity and lead systems change at scale.

Koala populations on Australia’s east coast have officially been listed as an endangered species, after dramatic population decline. Habitat destruction, climate change and extreme weather events including bushfires and floods have had a significant impact on koalas.

WWF-Australia is working tirelessly to turn this tragedy around and Koala has joined them in their mission to double koala numbers across eastern Australia by 2050.

With the support of partners like Koala, WWF-Australia is working to ensure koalas have a thriving future by protecting and restoring their habitats, improving conservation practices, and supporting First Nations leadership in koala recovery efforts.

Our partnership aims to inspire and educate Koala’s customers and deliver innovative, impactful and meaningful moments that raise awareness of threats to our wildlife, in particular koalas, and how important conservation is for our future generations.

This partnership is a reflection on Koala’s commitment to sustainability and conservation.  For mattresses, sofas and sofa beds sold by Koala, a portion of Koala’s sales is donated to WWF every year.  Since the beginning of our partnership, Koala has donated over AUD$4M to WWF conservation efforts, helping to achieve significant biodiversity and environmental impacts.

What We've Achieved

The evolution of our partnership has allowed us to deliver innovative, impactful and meaningful moments that raise awareness of threats to our wildlife, and how important conservation is for our future generations.

Together we will continue to strive to create a sustainable future where wildlife can thrive in their natural habitats - especially in this climate crisis.

Since our partnership with Koala began in 2017, some of our achievements include:

  • Planting more than 50,000 trees across koala habitat
  • Distributing more than 90,000 trees to landholders for planting in koala habitats
  • Supporting detection dogs to collect data for over 3,000 koala surveys to understand koala populations and genetic diversity
  • Supporting the care of over 50 sick and injured koalas and releasing them back into the wild
  • Purchasing crucial equipment for koala carer teams to safely capture, care for, and release koalas
  • Helping mobilise hundreds of ongoing volunteers to support koalas
  • Supporting critical research to help understand and prevent feminisation of sea turtles caused by climate change
  •  Installing 28 nest boxes for the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoos species located on Kangaroo Island
  • Supporting WWF-Australia's work to advocate for the establishment of the Great Koala National park in NSW to protect vital koala habitat
